New Podcast Episode: Davey Blackburn on Finding Purpose in Pain, Forgiveness, and Running to the Roar

Updated: Sep 27

In the latest episode of Behind The Mike Podcast, I had the privilege of sitting down with Davey Blackburn, who bravely shares his heartbreaking story of loss, healing, and hope. In November 2015, Davey’s pregnant wife, Amanda, was tragically murdered during a home invasion in their Indianapolis home. This unimaginable event altered the course of Davey’s life forever, yet through his pain, he discovered a greater purpose and now carries a message of hope and restoration for others.

“Run to the Roar”

One of the most powerful moments in our conversation was when Davey reflected on the advice from his friend, Levi Lusko, to “run to the roar.” This phrase comes from a story about how lions hunt: the older lions with weak teeth roar loudly to scare their prey into running—straight into the trap of younger lions waiting to strike. Lusko encouraged Davey to run toward the thing that seemed terrifying, rather than away from it. In Davey’s life, that meant confronting his grief head-on, facing his deepest fears, and allowing God to meet him in his pain.

Finding Purpose in the Pain

Davey also opened up about how he began to see purpose in his pain. It’s often in our darkest moments that we’re shaped and refined. For Davey, this was an opportunity to lean into his faith and trust that God was still writing his story, even after such a devastating loss. He has since found a calling in helping others navigate their own seasons of suffering, guiding them to discover that even in the most excruciating circumstances, there is hope, healing, and purpose.

The Power of Forgiveness

Perhaps the most extraordinary part of Davey’s journey is his decision to forgive the individuals responsible for Amanda’s death. Forgiveness is never easy, especially when the wounds are so deep. Yet Davey emphasized that forgiveness is not only about releasing the offender but also about releasing yourself from the prison of bitterness and anger. It’s a decision that has allowed him to move forward, not with the weight of vengeance or hatred, but with the freedom to heal and help others.

A New Chapter: Nothing Is Wasted

Today, Davey, along with his new wife, runs a ministry called Nothing Is Wasted, where they offer support and encouragement to others walking through pain. Their mission is to help people see that no matter how broken or lost you may feel, God can bring purpose from your suffering. Davey has also authored a new book, Nothing Is Wasted, which delves deeper into his story, his journey toward forgiveness, and how he found redemption through tragedy.

This conversation was an incredible reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the grace of God in the midst of unimaginable pain. Davey Blackburn’s story will inspire you to face your fears, find purpose in your trials, and embrace the healing power of forgiveness.
