Losing a pet can feel like losing a member of the family. Whether it’s a loyal dog, a playful cat, or even a small companion like a hamster or rabbit, the grief is real and often leaves us wondering: Do pets go to heaven?

In this episode of Behind the Mike Podcast, host Mike Stone wrestles with this tender question by looking at what the Bible says — and doesn’t say — about the eternal destiny of animals. This isn’t just a theological debate; it’s an emotional question that touches anyone who has ever loved and lost a pet.

Why We Ask: The Pain of Losing a Pet

Pets are more than animals. They bring us joy, comfort, companionship, and unconditional love. When they pass away, we feel the loss deeply. Mike shares his own story of losing two beloved Dobermans, Rocky and Lucy, and how their absence left him searching for biblical truth and spiritual comfort.

What the Bible Says About Animals

The Bible doesn’t directly say, “Yes, Fluffy will be in heaven.” But Scripture gives us powerful clues about God’s care for creation:

  • Genesis 1–2: God creates animals and calls them good, entrusting Adam with their care.

  • Psalm 50: God declares, “Every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills.”

  • Matthew 10:29: Not even a sparrow falls without God noticing.

  • Jonah 4:11: God’s compassion extends even to animals.

Clearly, animals are not afterthoughts — they matter to God.

Do Animals Have Souls?

Ecclesiastes 3 asks a fascinating question: “Who knows if the spirit of man goes upward and the spirit of the beast goes down into the earth?” While humanity is uniquely made in God’s image, this verse leaves open the possibility that animals also have a place in God’s eternal plan.

Prophetic Hints of Animals in Eternity

Several passages in Scripture point to a restored creation that includes animals:

  • Isaiah 11: A vision of peace where wolves dwell with lambs and lions eat straw like oxen.

  • Romans 8: All creation groans, awaiting redemption.

  • Revelation 21: God promises a new heaven and new earth — not just souls in the clouds, but a renewed creation.

Theological Perspectives

  • Early Church Thinkers: Augustine and Aquinas emphasized humans alone having eternal souls, while Eastern Christianity leaned toward all creation’s renewal.

  • C.S. Lewis: Suggested in The Problem of Pain that pets might live on through their relationship with redeemed humans.

  • Randy Alcorn: Argues in his book Heaven that animals will be part of eternity since God restores, not discards, His creation.

Comfort for Grieving Pet Owners

Mike emphasizes that grieving a pet is not silly — it’s a natural response to the loss of a good gift from God. If God notices a sparrow’s fall, He certainly notices your tears when you bury your cat or dog.

And here’s the hope: while Scripture doesn’t guarantee that your specific pet will be in heaven, it does promise that nothing truly good is lost in Christ. God is loving, generous, and creative enough to restore what is good and make all things new.

A God of Abundance

At the heart of this question is not simply, “Will I see my dog again?” but rather, “What kind of God do I believe in?”

  • A stingy God who saves only souls?

  • Or a generous God who promises, “Behold, I make all things new” (Revelation 21:5)?

The Bible paints the picture of the second — a God of abundance, goodness, and overflowing love.

Final Encouragement

So, do pets go to heaven? We can’t know for certain. But we can rest in the hope that God cares for His creation, redeems all things, and is far more generous than we can imagine.

If you’ve lost a pet, grieve fully — and hope deeply. Because the same God who gave His Son for you has promised a future where everything sad becomes untrue.
